JONATHAN SHEARER, 96, a former resident of this city, died at his home in Omaha, Neb.,according to word received here. He was an uncle of Mrs Laura H Shanaman and Mrs Mary Mengel, this city. Shearer was one of the First defenders of the Union and was among those who responded to Lincoln's call. His name appears on the soldier's monument in City Park erected in the memory of the first volunteers called in the Civil War. Interment was made at Red Oak, Iowa. He was injured in the Mollie Maguire disturbances during a coal strike. After recovering from his wounds, he moved west.

Jonathan Shearer and his wife Mary A. Whitman were blessed with 11 children, 10 daughters and one son, Joseph W
