July 23, 1909John Dodd died at his home in Pilot Grove Township, Sunday evening July 18 from the
infirmities of old age.The deceased was born in Amherst County, Virginia, Feb. 23, 1830. He moved, with his parents, to Hamilton Co., Indiana, where he was married to Phebe Bolt in 1850. In 1855 he, with a party of others started with ox teams and covered wagons across the country for Iowa, locating in Montgomery County in October of the same year, and has been a residence ever since.
He volunteered as soldier of the Union during the Civil War, serving three years. During the past ten years he has been unable to do any work on account of injuries received by falling from a building, which caused him to be partially crippled.
His wife died 22 years ago; he is survived by three sons and 4 daughters, who mourn the loss of a kind father. All were present except one son, who resides in Colorado.
Those of the children who were present at his
funeral were: Mrs. Adella Ingrahm of Pine River,
Minn., Wm. Dodd, Wesley Dodd, and Mrs. J. A.
Carmichael and Mrs. Charles Everett, all of this
county and Mrs. C. H. Becknell of Okemah, Oklahoma.Funeral services were held in Frankfort M. E. Church on Tuesday, July 21, conducted by Reverend W. W. Merrirt, an old time friend since pioneer days on Montgomery County, and the Pastor, Rev. W. B. Shike. Internment was in Frankfort cemetery.
