DEATH OF SAMUEL GARDNER

Samuel Gardner, for a number of years a resident of this vicinity, died at his home in Malvern Saturday of last week at half past twelve o’clock of pneumonia. His sickness was of short duration lasting barely a week.
Funeral services were held in Villisca at the M.E. church under the ministration of Rev. Enoch Hill Sunday afternoon and interment was in the cemetery here, the family accompanying the remains this this city Sunday morning.
Samuel Gardner was born at Uricksville, Ohio, February 25, 1851, and died May 23, 1908. When but six years of age he came with his parents to Illinois, where he lived until 21 years of age. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Etta Roy. To this union three children were born, namely: Jasper of Orleans, Nebraska, J.K. Gardner of Villisca, Iowa, and Maud who died when an infant. On the 20th day of January, 1884, he was married to Orpha Preston to whom five children were born, viz: Mrs. Leta Robbins of Malvern, Earl, Mabel, Effie and Fred, all of whom were with him at the time of his death.
In 1886 they moved to Libertyville, Iowa, and in 1892 the removed to Villisca, where they resided until December, 1907, when they went to Malvern, where his death occurred, and, while there but a short time, made a host of friends, who deeply sympathize with the bereaved family. Mr. Gardner united with the M.E. church in 1899 and lived a professed Christian life.
Besides the relatives mentioned above, Mr. Gardner has two brothers, Mahlon of Villisca and George of Malvern both of whom were with him at the time of his death and present at the funeral. All have sympathy of this community.
