Mrs. Isabella Carson, Hammond, was of royal blood, from the country of Ireland. She was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, April 19, 1817. United with the Associated Presbyterian Church when 15 years of age, and was a staunch defender of these principles till the day of her death. She was married to Mr. James P. Hammond, Jan. 24, 1842, and shared with him the duties and hardships incident to their strenuous life, in the betterment of their fellow men, expecially the negroes. They lived, labored and prospered in Morrow County, Ohio till the Spring 1862 when the pressure against the abolishment there became so strong that they came to Washington, Ia., thence to a farm near Frederic, Monroe County, Ia., in Feb 1869, and thence to Albia in 1887. She was the mother of two sons and two daughters, Mary Bell died about 18 years ago, and David so well known here, died about two years ago., Lizzie who lived at the old home and so faithfully cared for her aged and crippled mother, and Thomas M in Nelson, Neb. She buried her companion about ten years ago. In the winter of 1882 she fell on the ice in their yard, breaking a leg, causing her to use crutches the rest of her days. Last fall she fell and broke the other leg at the hip joint, and has been a great sufferer ever since, but not a murmur ever escaped her lips. She was perfectly resigned to God's will. She had an unshaken faith in her redeemer. For many years she had been expecting her call, but perfectly willing to abide her time. Her judgement was good with very little reception to the time of her death, on Monday, May 8th, at 7:30 a.m. She cheerfully yielded up her spirit to him who gave it. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."
