The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 16, 1908

WM. BERNARD died Thursday morning at 2:30 after an illness of more than two
years.

Deceased was born in Frederick County, Maryland, December 17, 1823, residing there until he was seventeen, when he removed to Ohio, and lived in Seneca County for some time and where he was married to MISS ELIZABETH EGBERT, and to this union were born eight children, seven boys and one daughter, one dying in infancy. The children are CHARLES W., GEORGE, WARREN, ROLLA, JESSE ALTA, WM. JR. MRS. BERNARD died December 31, 1890.

MR. BERNARD moved to Monroe County in 1855, practicing law for a number of years. He is a man that made many friends and was well thought of wherever he was known. Coming to this county when it was undeveloped, by hard work he built up a competence and might have lived many more years to have
enjoyed the fruits of his toil had he not been stricken by paralysis in September, 1905, and from which he never recovered. For the past six months he was entirely helpless and at times was a great sufferer until death
finally relieved him yesterday morning.

After the death of his first wife, he was married to MRS. SARAH ALBERT on October 15, 1892, at Albia, and to this loving wife, who so faithfully cared for him throughout his long siege of sickness, does the sympathy of the entire community go out. She with the children, who have been mentioned before, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father and husband. Only two of the children are living in this vicinity, CHARLES and WM. JR., the others are scattered over the western States and could not be at their father's bedside.

MR. BERNARD was conscious only a part of the time but his death was very peaceful, like a child going to sleep. The funeral will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30, at the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Schreiner, of Albia, and interment in North Cemetery.
