Thomas Dougherty

Thomas Dougherty was born in the parish of Doon, County Limerick Ireland in 1830 and died at his home seven miles northeast of Albia at 3:30 o'clock, Thursday, September 20, 1906.

When he was nineteen years of age he came to this country with his mother, five brothers and three sisters and they landed in New Orleans. During an epidemic of yellow fever all his brothers were stricken and died.

He was married while a resident of New Orleans to Miss Margaret Tierney on June 25, 1855 and three children were born to them while in New Orleans.

In 1860 he loaded his family and worldly possessions on a steamboat and came to Eddyville, Iowa and was hauled by oxen from there to his home in Guilford Township, Monroe County. He settled on 40 acres (and kept acquiring land until he had at least 500 acres) where Hiteman now stands and remained there until the coal company purchased the land to open the present Hiteman mines. When he had sold out there he purchased land in Bluff Creek Township (and purchased 1152 acres) and there resided at the time of his death.

He is survived by the widow Margaret, two married daughters, Mrs. Bridget Cullinan and Mrs. Mary Sinnott, one daughter at home, Miss Margaret. Stephen died in infancy and Patrick left home some years ago. The other boys are Maurice, William, Michael, Thomas and John, and they are all at home.

The funeral was held in Albia on Saturday, September 22 from St. Mary's Catholic Church and the remains were interred in the new St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery a short distance southwest of Albia.

Mr. Dougherty was a devout Christian man, honored and esteemed wherever he was known. He lived a purely moral and uplifting life and his death was but the transmission of the spirit to the land where sorrow comes no more.
