Obituary

John Barry, an old time resident and respected citizen of this county died at his home in Melrose Wednesday evening March 25th at 6 o'clock after a lingering illness of several weeks. He died as he had lived, with a smile on his face.

All was done for him that loving hands and skillful physicians could do, but God took him from this word to the beautiful beyond; where trouble and pain are known no more.

Deceased was born in Limerick county, Ireland 75 years ago. From there he went to New York, and shortly afterwards removed to Galesburg, Ill. where he resided until 1866. He then went to Chicago where he was united in marriage to Ellen O'Shea. In 1868, they came to Monroe county where he has resided ever since. To the union were born three children: James, John and Michael. Of those James survives to mourn the loss of his father. This wife died and he married Sarah Aiken who survives him. To this union nine children were born. Of these, six children survive. Mrs. John Curran of Russell, Mrs. Mike Carmody of Platte, South Dakota, William , Margaret, Sarah and Stephen are left to mourn his loss, besides a number of relatives and friends.

The funeral was held Friday morning at 10 o'clock, at St. Patrick's church, where solemn high mass was sung, conducted by Father Brownrigg. Interment made in catholic cemetery. The family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.

May God in his infinite mercy grant repose to the soul of this faithful and true Christian is the sincere prayer of all who knew him.

Put by his work and his empty chair,
Fold up the garments he used to wear,
Let down the curtains and close the door,
He will need the garish light no more,
For the task assigned him under the sun,
Is finished now, and Gurdon on,
One last look - then put out the light.
Leave him alone he rests tonight,
May his soul rest in peace.

-Melrose Bell
