Annie Greene Coady
MRS. PIERCE COADY
Sunday, October 28, 1917, marked the passing of one of the oldest members of St. Patrick's Georgetown. One by one those who were the earliest settlers in these parts are passing from earth and by their works ye shall know them.
Annie Green was born in the County Tipperary, Ireland, on Christmas, 1837. She came to this country when about nineteen years of age living for a short time in Ohio later going to Keokuk, Iowa, where she was married to Pierce Coady on February 4, 1859. They came at once to his farm in Franklin township where they spent fifty-one years together.
Of the ten children the following survive: John, James, Lawrence, Patrick, Mrs. John Judge and Mrs. James O'Brien, together with thirty-nine grand children and five great grand children. One brother, Michael Green, still lives in Georgetown. Since the death of her husband in 1910 Mrs. Coady has lived with her daughter, Mrs. John Judge.
Though deprived of her sight in later years she was a model of patience. That beautiful Irish characteristic: "Thanks be to God for everything", was ever on her lips in joy or misfortune. Having lived a good life she consequently died as she had lived.
The funeral service was held on October 31, the eve of All Saints, the Pastor of St. Patrick's celebrated the Requiem High Mass assisted by Rev. Father Walsh of Albia. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Father Murphy and portrayed the General Judgment so vividly as to leave a lasting impression on all present. The remains were tenderly borne to their last resting place by six grandsons.
Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Thomas King of Burlington; Mrs. Charles Conway of Reynolds, III; Mrs. John Farrell of Des Moines and James Tracey of Ottumwa.
