Bernard J. "Ben" Scieszinski

A celebration of the life of Bernard Joseph Scieszinski will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Hayhurst Funeral Home Chapel with military honors. Ben will be laid to rest at Park Grove Cemetery. He passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the age of 92.

Ben was born in Melrose, Iowa on October 11, 1924 to Martin and Mary Jeanette (Kosman) Scieszinski. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1942 before continuing his education by studying architecture for two years. Ben also trained as a Machinist Mate at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. On July 6, 1943 Ben enlisted in the United States Navy to honorably serve his country. He served aboard NTS, Farragut, Idaho, Repair Unit, Navy 134, Repair Unit, Navy, 3205 and Ship Repair Unit, Navy 3002. Ben was awarded several medals including the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, American Area Campaign Medal before his honorable discharge on April 18, 1946.

On May 3, 1947 Ben married Juanita Faye Wright in a Chicago wedding ceremony. Their union was blessed with six children.

Ben was most recently an insurance agent with Prudential but also worked as a butcher, a fireman on the Santa Fe Railroad, a driver for Standard Oil Company and at A&P Grocery store.

In his free time, Ben enjoyed fishing and just being outdoors in nature. He was proud of his military service and was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Memorials may be made to Blinded Veterans Association.

Ben is survived by:

Daughters: Linda Splayt, Tulsa, OK, Dawn Scieszinski, Tulsa, OK

Sons: Bernie Scieszinski and wife Barbara, Tulsa, OK; Mark Scieszinski, Tulsa, OK, Scott Scieszinski and wife Sheryl, Murrieta, CA

Grandchildren: Peter and wife Christina, Nadia, Amanda, Jessica and husband Kevin, Michelle, Melissa, Ryan, Zachary and 7 Great Grandchildren.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Debra, granddaughter Michelle, brothers, Lewis, Edward and sisters, Agnes and Irene.
