Richard Eugene Johnston, 62, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died Friday June 6, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from an accidental fall at home. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, June 10th at First Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life service will take place at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, June 11th also at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Thomas E.S. Miller will officiate. Private Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Julie; son Doug Johnston and wife Brenda, daughter DeAnne Johnston, daughter Kris Bruns and husband Jeff; grandchildren Trevor and Alana Johnston, and Lydia and Laura Bruns. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Carl and Beulah [Mohler] Johnston, and his aunt and uncle Rev. Dr. Herbert and Laura [Johnston] Brockway. Richard was born September 29, 1945 in Ottumwa. He grew up in Albia [Monroe Co.], Iowa. After high school he attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and later attended the University of Iowa. He was a retired member of Local #125 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. In 2001 he became a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty. He also delivered meals for the Witwer Center's Home Delivered Program, which he found to be very rewarding. He was also an avid sports fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was also a member and served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church as well as serving the Presbytery of East Iowa. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many and will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of The University of Iowa SICU, Harry and Nancy Oltoff, and Rev. Ted Miller.In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Richard's name.
