The Grim Reaper

Louisa Lower, daughter of John and Prudence Lower, was born near Rushville, Indiana, March 15, 1826, and came with her parents to Iowa, in 1843, settling first in Van Buren county, but in the spring of 1845 moved to Monroe, then called Kiskekosh county.

On December 7th, 1845, she was united in marriage to Hon. O. P. Rowles, the marriage license being the second to be issued in the county. She with her husband made them a home four miles south of the present city of Albia, where they resided continuously for over 55 years until they moved to their present home at 403 South Clinton street, Albia, where she continued the labor of home making and keeping, in which she found her greatest comfort.

About three months ago her advanced age began to tell on her and she gradually declined until Thursday evening, July 20, 1911, she peacefully fell asleep and entered the rest she much longed for during the last few days of suffering.

She was converted in early life and united with the M.E. church in which she continued to live a loyal and devoted member.

Her home was ever open and made a resting place for the weary pioneer Methodist circuit riders and where preaching and other services were often held.

Mother Rowles was the mother of four children, Mrs. P.E. Enix, W. A. and J.H. Rowles and Mrs. J. G. Pierson. All of them were with her to the end and will rise up and call her blessed and cherish the memories of her gentle teaching.

A few hours before passing through the valley she called the sorrowing ones around her and bidding each good-bye, asked that they meet her in Heaven and then shouting, “Glory, Hallelujah,” asked the dear Lord to take her home.

For over sixty-five years she has been a helpmeet to him, who is yet spared to mourn her departure.

Besides the above she leaves one brother, T. S. Lower and many other relatives, most of whom are present today to attest the esteem they had for her.
