Melrose

Mrs. Alexander McDonald died at her home on North Elm street, Friday, Dec. 24, at 9:45 a.m., after a lingering illness of several months.

Mrs. McDonald was born at Keokuk, Nov. 18, 1849. She was married to Mr. McDonald in 1862, at Georgetown. They purchased a farm west of Melrose. There the family of thirteen children were born, two dying in infancy. After leaving the farm they came to Melrose and resided here for several years. Mr. McDonald preceded her a little over a year ago, dying Dec. 1, 1914. Mrs. McDonald failed rapidly since his death.

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic church, Monday, Dec. 27. Solemn High Mass was celebrated by Rev. W. J. McCormick, assisted by Rev. P. J. Murphy of Georgetown, and Rev. Father Albert, Conception, Mo. Father McCormick preached a touching funeral sermon.

She leaves to mourn their loss 5 sons, James, Joseph, John, Frank, Arthur, 6 daughters, Mrs. J. J. O'Brien, Mrs. J. P. Hannam, Mrs. Henry Hannam, Mrs. T. P. Carr, Mrs. J. H. Murray, and Mrs. J. J. O'Connor, of Omaha. 39 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. S. Riordan, Mrs. Chas. McEniry of Sedalia, Mo., 2 brothers, James D. Knowles and Patrick Knowles of Kansas City, Kansas. The pall bearers, all nephews of the deceased, were: S. M. Riordan, W.S. Knowles, James Lahart, Edward McDonald, John Stone, Jas. F. McDonald. Chas. Carr of West Liberty, a brother-in-law, attended the funeral, besides many old time relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. O'Connor of Omaha, were called here by the illness and death of her mother, Mrs. Alex McDonald.
