JAMES MATTHEW PHILLIPS, son of WILLIAM and CLARACY PHILLIPS, was born in Kaleska, Ohio on June 03, 1857. He passed away at his home, 457 South Willard on February 27, 1923. He was united in marriage to MISS ELIZABETH McDERMOTT, March 04, 1878.
To this union were born five children, One son JOHNNY preceded him in death; His widow and the following children; MRS MARY HUDSON, MRS CLARA HARLAN, MRS ANNA LANNIGAN, and HENRY PHILLIPS all of Ottumwa, Iowa
Six grandchildren; RILEY HUDSON, HARRY CLARK, LENORA CLARK, ELIZABETH HARTLEY, JAMES LANNIGAN and TIMOTHY LANNIGAN.Four great-grandchildren; ROBERT HUDSON, JACK HUDSON, ROSEMARY HARTLEY and one brother JOHN PHILLIPS of Carbondale, Ohio.
And a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Coal Miners Union No 162. of Monroe County Iowa. He was the first one to join the union.Pallbearers were his friends and brothers of the Union. W.B.DEFORD, GUY LESTER, GEORGE LESTER, VIRGIL LESTER, CARL CRACTIO and ED WARE.
Funeral services were held March 01, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Ottumwa, Iowa at 9:00 a.m., conducted by Rev. Father H.G. Hogan. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Gone but, not forgotten.
