ALBIA — Jack E. Godfrey, 97, of Albia and formerly of Lovilia and Burlington died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Oak Wood Nursing and Rehab in Albia.Born April 12, 1910 in Monroe County near Lovilia, he was the son of Malcom E. and Ida E. Roberts Godfrey. On September 10, 1938 he married Anna May Schippers of Buxton in Lancaster, Mo. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1992.Mr.

Godfrey served in Company G, 168th Infantry in Centerville. Moving to Burlington with his wife in 1941, Mr. Godfrey was employed at I.A.A.P. until 1953, Benner Tea Company from 1953–1974, owned Farmers Tavern in Oakville for two years and also drove a truck and was yard foreman for Vincent Lumber Company. Mr. Godfrey was a great hunter and fisherman in his younger days. He was a member of Teamsters Union #218, Denmark Senior Citizens Club over 20 years and the Des Moines County Saddle Club for over 20 years.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Jo Hanna (Joe) Williams of Bussey; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; stepdaughter-in-law, Susie Schippers of Bussey; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Orvel Schippers; infant stepdaughter, Crystal; three grandsons, Orvel Dean Schippers, Christopher Lee Williams and Rodney Lee Schippers; one great-granddaughter, Caitlin Grace Schippers; two sisters, Josie Smith and Jennie Pinager; three brothers, Fay Godfrey, Ernest Godfrey and Herbert Godfrey; one half brother, John Candiano; and special friend Marjorie Roberts.Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Sunday, March 30th, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends following the Rosary recitation at 5-7 p.m. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 31st, in Winfield Funeral Home, 116 Benton Ave. West, Albia.The funeral service for Mr. Godfrey will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1st, in Winfield Funeral Home with the Rev. Leo Freel officiating. Interment will be in Pringle Cemetery, Bussey.There will be a luncheon following the Committal Service at Union Christian Church.A memorial has been established for Burlington Notre Dame Schools.
