Mable M. Shaffer.

Mable Marie Shaffer, 90, of Onawa, Iowa, died Friday, April 12, 1996, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mrs. Shaffer was born February 4, 1906, in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ann (Howell) Butcher. She attended school in Onawa. Except for three years in Minnesota, she spent her entire life in Onawa.

In the 1920's Mable was one of the early telephone operators in Onawa. On January 28, 1928, she married Loyall Charles Shaffer at Elk Point, South Dakota. After his retirement, the couple owned and operated "Shaffer's This and That Shoppe" in Onawa. Mr. Shaffer died February 9, 1978 in Sioux City. She continued to operate the shop until she retired in 1992.

Area residents will recall the many calls they received from Mable as she called for news for the Onawa Sentinel over the years.

She was baptized in the Methodist faith.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth of Onawa, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ingrid Shaffer of Turin; a brother-in-law and his wife, Orlo and Odessa Shaffer of Whiting, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; two brothers, Raymond Butcher and Harry Butcher; and two sisters, Myrtle McJunkin and Bessie Kinsley.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 1996, at the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
