Death Claims A Real Pioneer

A resident of Monona County for the past 68 years, John Quincey Adams of Mapleton, Iowa, a Civil War veteran died Friday morning at a Sioux City hospital following an operation. He was 88 years old.

The aged veteran had been in failing health for several months and Wednesday and operation was performed, but due to his advanced age, Mrs. Adams was unable to rally and his condition grew worse until Friday morning when he passed away.

Coming west to Monona County in 1857 from Keokuk County Mr. Adams settled on a farm in the vicinity of Mapleton which at that time was sparsely settled.

At the outbreak of the civil war he attempted to enlist but on account of physical incapability’s he was rejected. On several other occasions he attempted to enlist in the service but each time was refused until the draft was started in 1864 when he finally was accepted and poined the Fourth Iowa Calvary. His detachment was sent to Missouri where it was assigned to the troops engaged in crushing the guerilla warfare in that state. Later the Calvary was ordered to join Sherman on his famous march to the sea, but arrived at Georgia after Lee’s surrender.

At the end of the war the Iowa Calvary was ordered to Washington where it was mustered out. Mr. Adams and two companions rode horse back from Washington to Iowa.

Mr. Adams was born in Maine November 27, 1837, being named after President John Quincy Adams. After several years residence in Maine he moved with his family to Iowa, which at that time was infested with savage Indians, and settled in Keokuk County where he lived until he moved to Mapleton.

In 1861 Mr. Adams married Louisa Jane McCleery a member of one of western Iowa’s earliest families. To this union nine children were born, two of whom survive. Mrs. Adams preceded her husband in death 12 years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mamie Hollister of Mapleton and a son Ed Adams who resided with his father.
