Joyce was born August 20, 1929 in Girard, Kansas to Pearl and Sarah (Shipman) Wintjen. Joyce was the oldest of 10 siblings and always reminded them she was. She would frequently talk about helping her mom Sarah to care for them. At age 16, she married Ratliff “Bud” Bonine after he returned home from the Army. Joyce’s dad agreed and signed the consent for her to marry. Bud and Joyce then woke up the justice of the peace and were married at the Erie, Kansas courthouse on Feb 3rd, 1946. Her and Bud had two boys, Max and Doug. If you didn’t know, Max and Doug did no wrong in Joyce’s eyes and she would tell you just so. Bud, Joyce and the boys moved from Parsons, Kansas to Onawa, Iowa in 1955 where they made their home. On Saturday nights, Joyce and Bud could often be found dancing at the Eagles. Bud and Joyce enjoyed fishing, camping and dancing. Their love story ended early with Bud’s passing on August 15, 1982.
Joyce later married Kenneth “Bus” Beedle on March 8th 1985 in Onawa, Iowa at the First Christian Church. Bus and Joyce enjoyed traveling together. They vacationed in Europe and even went on an Alaskan cruise. He passed on October 4, 1997.
Joyce met Joe Moser of Elgin, Nebraska at a dance and they grew close and spent many years together. Joyce and Joe went dancing, traveled, and fished. They fished every dam in the Missouri River except one. She would regularly go to the ranch with Joe and help him. They enjoyed a small café in town and local friends there. They were family to each other. Joe passed on March 3, 2016.
Joyce worked at Safeway grocery store and McFarland Furniture for several years. Since Joyce married young, she did not earn her high school diploma so at the age of 50 she received her GED. She was very proud of this. Through the years Joyce had several hobbies and interests: crocheting, gardening, sewing, and flowers. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Burgess Memorial Hospital, played cards and had her ladies “coffee group” at the Happy Chef. Joyce always hosted the family Thanksgiving dinners for the majority of her life. With time, this family dinner would grow to 50-60 members of the Bonine, Seward, and Wintjen family. It was a tradition. As she got older and couldn’t cook, the rest of the family worked together to make sure the tradition stayed alive, and Thanksgiving continued to be hosted at Joyce’s home.
Her true passion was spending time with family, especially her boys. Both Max and Doug could often be found each morning sitting with Joyce having a cup of coffee and Dr Pepper. Unfortunately, these mornings changed with the loss of firstborn Max on May 17, 2023. Doug and Joyce leaned on each other as they grieved the loss. Then on January 31, 2024, Joyce lost Doug, her rock.
Just a few short days ago, Joyce celebrated her 95th birthday with family and a few close friends. Joyce enjoyed this last celebration with those she loved and those that loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters-in-law, Vicki Bonine of Onawa, Iowa and Evie Bonine of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren, Stephanie (Kelly) Bonine Agee, Rachel Peterson, Christy Allen, Matt Bonine, Douglas Bonine, Tevie Lester, Hydie Poole, and Angie Lester; many great grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Seward of Onawa, Iowa and Ruby Best of Coffeyville, Kansas; three brothers, Larry (Rita) Wintjen of Coffeyville, Kansas, Ronnie (Wanda) Wintjen of Nowata, Oklahoma, and George (Janie) Wintjen of Afton, Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Sarah (Shipman) Wintjen; husbands, Bud Bonine and Bus Beedle; sons, Max Bonine and Doug Bonine; companion of fourteen years, Joe Moser; and four brothers, James Wintjen, Roger Wintjen, Joe Dale Wintjen, and Donald Dean Wintjen.
