Lavonne Ellen Steward was born on September 16, 1924, in Blencoe, Iowa. The daughter of Mark David and Lucy Ann (Richardson) Steward. She was the youngest of 11 children. She enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in the foothills near Moorhead and Castana, Iowa.

She attended country schools at Moorhead and Castana and high school at Castana High School.

On December 22, 1941, Lavonne was united in marriage to Homer Glen Edmonds at Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Janice Lee and Marlene Ellen. After Homer returned from serving two and a half years in WWII in the South Pacific, they lived in Junction City, KS, Neosho, MO, and Camp Crowder, MO. They moved to Onawa, IA in January, 1945.

Lavonne’s family was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She supported and encouraged her family well! Her home was always a welcome place where she enjoyed being a homemaker, working in the yard and garden, and flowers. She enjoyed attending children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren activities, and working at the church. She accepted Jesus as her savior and was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church for 69 years. She was involved in the Ladies Bible Class, afternoon circle and council. She was a 60-year member of the American Legion and disabled American Veterans Axillary Unit 54. She was a girl scout leader for 7 years. She served on the election board for many years and poppy chairman. Lavonne’s faith and love of her family and country was her foundation.

Survivors include her daughter Janice (John) Epperson, son-in-law Mike Williams, grandchildren: Jody (Chris) Roudabush, Jason (Lacy) Epperson, Janelle (Tim) Stahl, Mark Williams, and Michalene (Scott) Beckenhauer, great-grandchildren: Sydney (Darius) Bradford, Luke (Gracee) and Lydia Roudabush, Abe, Bo, Kate and Zeke Epperson, Makenna, Klara, and Brielle Stahl, Kody, Samuel (Heather), and Max Williams, Josiah, Regan, and Grant Beckenhauer, great-great-grandchild Austin Williams, and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Lavonne went to be with her Lord, Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 7:28 AM.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Homer, December 27, 1983, daughter Marlene, March 23, 2016, sisters: Edna Campbell, Violet Archer, Dorothy Kepner, and Martha Christianson, brothers: Everett, in infancy, Ernest, Cary, Harold, Guy, who gave his life for his country, and Donald and their spouses, and mother and father-in-law, Christopher and Pearl Edmonds.

A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the First Christian Church in Onawa, IA, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service starting at 10:00 AM. Interment will be held at Onawa City Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be given in memory of Lavonne to Central Iowa Christian School or First Christian Church of Onawa and mailed in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
