Nellie May Clingenpeel, the daughter of Robert and Nellie (Riley) Wagner, was born on February 24, 1933, in Kennebec, Monona County, Iowa. She graduated from Castana High School in 1951.

On March 31, 1951, Nellie was united in marriage to Leonard Clingenpeel in Dakota City, Nebraska. They were married for 53 years until Leonard passed away in 2004. They raised seven children together on farms near Smithland and Mapleton, Iowa. They later moved to the town of Mapleton, where Nellie lived for about 35 years before moving to Oklahoma and living with her daughter, Linda.

Nellie was a patient and loving wife to Leonard. She volunteered extensively with the Mapleton Food Pantry and Mapleton Legion Auxiliary where she served as president and treasurer. She was a past member of the Red Hat society and enjoyed traveling. Nellie had a surprising sharp sense of humor and loved to do puzzles. She loved to sing songs like Old Shep and Chocolate Ice Cream Cone.

She loved the Serenity Prayer, “God Grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.” Nellie had unyielding patience and never had an unkind word for anyone. She loved birds, particularly finches, and her Cockatiel named Charlie who she had for more than 15 years.

She is also survived by four daughters: Linda (Terry) Hollan of Miami, OK, LaNelle (Robert) Barker of Castana, IA, Judy (Allen) Corzine of Topeka, KS and Shirley (William) Vonderhaar of New Vienna, IA.
