Dorothy Jean Gunion, 96, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 11:30 A.M., Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Paul Coen, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted online at the Goslar Funeral Home website with Dorothy’s obituary. Luncheon will follow the funeral service at the church. Burial will follow the luncheon in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. A visitation will be 10:00 – 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Dorothy Jean was born February 17, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Esther (Krogh) Jorgensen. She was baptized July 17, 1927 and confirmed on June 8, 1941 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elk Point, South Dakota. Dorothy grew up on a farm near Elk Point, South Dakota. She attended school at Elk Point High School and graduated with the class of 1945. She furthered her education at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, and Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. Dorothy received her teaching degree from Morningside College.

Dorothy and Virgil Gunion were married on June 22, 1957, in Elk Point, South Dakota. To this union two sons were raised, Michael and John.

She taught for forty years at the Onawa Public School and West Monona School systems. She taught 5th and 6th grade; she enjoyed teaching math. Dorothy was on the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, and Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Dorothy was a member of the Onawa Women’s Club, Onawa Country Club and Ladies Golfing Club, and Burgess Auxiliary Board. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, where she participated in WELCA.

She enjoyed reading history and mystery books, traveling, bus tours, sports, golf, bridge, and flowers. Dorothy loved to spend time with her friends and family.

Survivors include her sons, John Gunion of Elk Point, South Dakota, and Michael (Ann) Gunion of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Sarah Gunion of Springfield Missouri, Christina Gunion of Springfield, Missouri, and Katherine Campbell of Willard, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Grace, and Tyler Hendrickson; sister, Carol Jorgensen of Elk Point, South Dakota; nephews, Kent Wilson of Lohrville, Iowa, and Randy Wilson of Gowrie, Iowa; niece, Barbara Walker of Jefferson, Iowa; and many cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Gunion; parents, Fred and Esther (Krogh) Jorgensen; brother, Martin Jorgensen; and many cousins.
