10 August 2023Dwight Richard (Dick) Andersen, 66, of Soldier, Iowa, died peacefully under Hospice Care at the Madrid Home, in Madrid, Iowa on July 28, 2023, after a brief illness.
Dick was born in Onawa, Iowa on December 20, 1956 to Harry and Vivian (Norby) Andersen. He graduated from East Monona High School in 1975. After his time at Dana College in Blair, NE; Dick returned to Soldier to farm with his father and brother.
Dick loved sports, especially football, so when his nephews played football for Madrid and later Grand View University, he made the effort to attend. His nieces and nephews have many fond memories with Dick as they visited the farm having fun, and getting into a little trouble along the way.
Dick was an avid gardener. He grew a variety of fruits and vegetables, but he was especially proud of his gladiolas. He shared beautiful bouquets with family and friends. He was also an active member of Soldier Lutheran Church. He often volunteered to assist with the upkeep of the South Church and surrounding Cemetery.
Dick is survived by his brother Tom (Lisa) Andersen of Madrid, IA and sister Kathryn (Paul) Kalmoe of Johnston, IA; nephews, Dustin (Kali) Andersen, Tyler (Carly) Andersen, and Nathan (Jillian) Andersen, all of Madrid, IA; nieces, Sarah (Ron) Billingsley, of Altoona, IA, and Shauna (Dusty) Thomas of Norwalk, IA. He also leaves behind many great nieces and nephews; Ella, Wyatt, and Vivian Andersen; Hutch, Ada, and Jaxson Andersen, Atley and Axel Andersen; Teryn and Ellison Billingsley; and Decker Thomas.
Dick was proceeded in death by his parents Harry and Vivian Andersen; grandparents, Ole and Ada Norby and Nels Peter and Lena Andersen; and dear friends.
His Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m., and the service will begin at 12:00 noon, after which a Lunch will be served. Burial will follow at the Jordan Cemetery.
