Former midwife, nurse dies at 105

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Clara L. Mather, 105, of Sergeant Bluff, former practical nurse and midwife, died Wednesday morning in a nursing home in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. The Rev. Gary Marzolf will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodbury Township Cemetery in Sergeant Bluff. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today in the Christy Morningside Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Mrs. Mather, the former Clara Hall, was born Oct. 30, 1878, in Woodbury Township, Woodbury County and moved to a farm south of Sergeant Bluff in 1888. She married William E. Mather Sept. 7, 1896, in Elk Point, S.D. They homesteaded near Interior, S.D. for several years. She nursed for the Council of Defense in South Dakota during the flu epidemic of 1918-1919. They returned to Sergeant Bluff in the 1920s. Mr. Mather died June 4, 1957, in Sergeant Bluff.

Mrs. Mather worked as a practical nurse for 75 years, most of this time with Dr. R.M. Conmey in Sergeant Bluff. She operated a nursing home in her own home for over 10 years. During that time she helped in the delivery and care of 512 babies. She had lived at Pleasant View Nursing Home at Whiting for about 10 years.

She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
