Alva E. Gross, a longtime resident of Monona County, passed away at the Burgess Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He had been a patient in a Sioux City hospital for a number of weeks and for the past two weeks been in the hospital at Onawa. He had reached the age of 85 years and 6 months.

He was born in Pottawattamie County, Iowa on January 13, 1887, the son of William and Jennie Gross. At the age of 10, his family moved to a farm south of Turin and he had lived in Oto, Iowa and Monona County most of his life.

He was married to Cora May Scott and to this union two sons and two daughters were born.

Survivors are the children, Alva Clyde Gross of Ida Grove, Iowa and Donald M. Gross of Irwin, Iowa, Mrs. Guy (Helen) German of Ida Grove and Mrs. Leonard (Opal) Scroggle of Bedford, Iowa; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and 4 sisters, Mrs. Ruby Jividen of Onawa, Mrs. Edith Kalstrup of Moorhead, Iowa, Mrs. Cora Blessing of St. Louis, Mo. and Mrs. Mildred Pennock of Florence, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 4 brothers and one sister.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 1972 at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with the Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. Mrs. Orland Ferris sang, "In The Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Clara Kelley.

Bearers were LaVern Ooten, Glenn McCall, George Bowman, Dales Alexander, W.W. Brown & Orville Rutledge.

Interment was in the Oto, Iowa Cemetery.
