Gladys Vera Powers 1897 - 1981

Miss Gladys Vera Powers, 83, Castana, died Wednesday, April 22, 1981 in a nursing home at Onawa.

Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Castana Community Church. The body was cremated. The Walter Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Powers was born December 25, 1897 to John and Nettie (Springer) Powers at Castana. She was graduated from Castana High School in 1917. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and later was graduated from Morningside College.

She taught rural schools in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota for 40 years and also did substitute teaching in Sioux City for one year. Since losing her eyesight six years ago, she had made her home in nursing homes in Sioux City and Onawa.

Miss Powers was a member of the Castana Community Church and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member 0f the Rebekah Lodge at Castana for more than 50 years and a past noble grand of the lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include three brothers, Lester of New Ulm, Minnesota, Theodore of Castana and Robert of Yakima, Washington and four sisters, Mrs. Paul
(Ruth) Olson, Mrs. Nelson (Wilda) Jessip and Mrs. Helen Fisher, all of Sioux City and Mrs. Doris Farris of Onawa.
