Mrs. Hazel May Downing, 83, of Ute died Sunday, July 3, 1983, in a Sioux City hospital following a long illness.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ute. The Rev. Charles Jensen officiated. Burial was in the Saint Clair Cemetery in Ute.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walter Funeral Home in Ute.

Mrs. Downing, the former Hazel Kroll, was born March 1, 1900, to Herman and Lucy (Gerten) Kroll in Quimby. She moved to Ute as a small child. Except for a two stay in Sioux City, she lived the remainder of her life in Ute.

She attended Morningside College and married Rollie Downing on March 14, 1922, in Omaha. He died December 6, 1980.

She taught school in the Ute and Soldier communities before retiring in 1961.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Dorcas Circle of the church, the American Legion Auxiliary Aaby Post 442 of Ute, and the Iowa Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Robert of Ute and James of Sioux City; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Kroll of Tampa, Florida, and five sisters, Mrs. Merle Coates of Tampa, Mrs. Mary Christensen of Loma, Linda, California, Mrs. Gordon (Pauline) Carlisle of Brighton, Colorado, Mrs. Edna Etchison of Mapleton and Mrs. Neva Chedester of Ute.

Pallbearers were James Gregerson, Warren Thompson, Harvey Straight, Dean Gaines, Lee Freerking and Clark Downing.
