Joan Barnes, 88, of Onawa, Iowa passed from this life on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa. Joan was born on April 3, 1934, in Indianapolis to Rex and Nellie (Edwards) Brown.

A funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at the Onawa United Pentecostal Church, Onawa, Iowa with Reverend Brian Kinney, Reverend Paul Kinney, and Reverend Kent Jordan, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Joan’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. A visitation will be 1:00 -2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Joan married James LeRoy Barnes on December 29, 1951, in the home of Joan's parents. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary - and were married 70 years, 7 months and 7 days!

Joan worked for her dad in his grocery store, worked in a Dime Store in Indianapolis, and then later in a bakery.

Joan and Leroy became members of Christian Tabernacle in Indianapolis in 1964. Joan served as a Sunday School Teacher, teaching the 4-year-olds for many years. She worked alongside Laura Mae Needler cleaning the church! In later years, she served as the Librarian of the Christian Tabernacle School.

For many years, Joan and LeRoy worked together, cooking the big Thanksgiving meals for Christian Tabernacle's Anniversary Services, and also the Camp Meeting meals.

LeRoy and Joan moved to Onawa in March 2015 and became members of the Onawa United Pentecostal Church.

Joan is survived by her husband, James LeRoy Barnes; two daughters, Brenda and her husband, Reverend Paul Kinney of Canton, Missouri, and Pam and her husband, Reverend Brian Kinney of Onawa, Iowa; four granddaughters, Jami & her husband, Mark Tipton of Canton, Missouri, Michelle & her husband, Jeremy Ramos of Tabor, Iowa, Rachel & her husband, Aron Reyes of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Christie and her husband Peter Carron of Onawa, Iowa; one grandson, Aaron Kinney & his wife, Heather of St. Louis, Missouri; four great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and four bonus great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Rex and Nellie (Edwards) Brown; an infant son and an infant daughter; two sisters, Rachel Wells and Rosalie Gladish; and four brothers, Hubert Brown, Robert Brown, Herbert (Clede) Brown, and Donald Brown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for funeral expenses.
