Sharon Arlene (McGarr) Asmussen, 86, of Sioux City was called home peacefully to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, June 20, 2022.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Cemetery in rural Rodney, Iowa. Visitation, with family present, will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Sharon was born April 14, 1936, in Smithland, Iowa, to Francis and Dorothy (Miller) McGarr. They moved to Sioux City and Sharon graduated from Leeds High School in 1954. Sharon married Neal Asmussen on Feb. 8, 1957. They had three sons.

Sharon worked as an administrative assistant after high school for some Allergy Physicians until she had her firstborn Tod. Then she devoted her life to raising her three sons. Later she returned to the work force spending time at JC Penney customer service, Meyer Brothers Funeral Home, Pioneer Tele Technologies, a Long Lines Company of Chuck Longs. Sharon was a meticulous at her position there in verification and received many awards, including the Presidents Telesales Award of Excellence.

Growing up, Sharon was very close to her brother Herb and cousins Mona and Jack Miller. She loved telling stories of their many adventures. Sharon and Neal were excellent dancers and did a lot of dancing in the early years.

Sharon was on a bowling league for years and she was part of a weekly coffee club that has been meeting for over 60 years. She said her coffee friends loved and supported each other through life's joys and sorrows, and she treasured these ladies dearly. Sharon was a lifelong avid reader, especially loving the Pearl Buck and poet Edgar Guest's works. Sharon loved to antique with her mother, finding many treasures. She also enjoyed going to the casino and she was the "Rain Man" of the slot machines!

But most of all, Sharon loved her family. She devoted her life to raising three fine men. Her mother Dorothy was her best friend; her cousin Mona was like a sister. She treasured every minute she could have with her sons and four grandchildren, taking them on great adventures and wishing for more time with them. After Heath's accident, Sharon devoted her life as his caregiver, humble and selfless.

Sharon is survived by her husband Neal; sons Tod (Cari), Stoy (Diane), and Heath; four grandchildren Trevor Asmussen, Sarah Asmussen, Sammy Asmussen, and Zane Asmussen; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother Ronald Everett McGarr; brother Herbert C. McGarr; uncle Cleo H. Miller; cousins Jack and Larry Miller; and other relatives and friends.
