Pioneer Woman Passes At Home Here Saturday

Mrs. Ed E Bakke Aged 87 Years, Beloved Citizen Suffers Heart Attack from Which She Did Not Rally

This community was again called upon to part with one of its pioneer residents and well beloved women, in the passing early Saturday of Mrs. Ed E. Bakke, mother of O. C. and Miss Agnes Bakke of this city. While frail for several years and gradually losing her sight she had seemed in her usual spirits and health until Wednesday before her death when she suffered a heart attack, which gradually weaken her until she slept away. Mrs. Bakke was truly a pioneer mother of Onawa. Coming here from her home in Norway when a girl with members of her family she knew the hardships and peril of frontier life in a strange land and that her courage and enduring fortitude prevailed through the years is well evidenced by the type of Christianity which she lived and the home which she presided over for more than sixty years. Such a heritage of love and devotion transending upon a family of children and grandchildren is a comfort indeed and they rise up and call her blessed.

Anne Mathea, daughter of Anne and Christopher Christopherson was born in Hurdahl, Norway, Feb. 24, 1946. Together with a brother Martin and a sister, Mrs. Carl E Moen, she came to Onawa June 22, 1870.

On July 1, 1871, she was united in marriage to Edward E. Bakke, who preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1928, after a married life of 57 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Bakke were the first couple married in Onawa, who liver to celebrate their golden wedding here. New from the fatherland they had much to learn of the ways of the new world and here Mrs. Bakke played a part in the community that was appreciated by many others coming later to this, then a frontier land. Her home was a place of counsel and many a lesson of new customs, cookery, etc. were imparted by her to other young women new in the land and less experienced.

She was a life long member of the Lutheran church and a charter member of the Onawa Lutheran church.

Mrs. Bakke was one of the organizers of the Lutheran Ladies Aid of which she was the president for a number of years.

She passed away Saturday morning Dec. 16, 1933. Aged 87 years, 9 mos, and 22 days.
