Mildred E. Olson

WHITING, Iowa - Mildred E. Olson, 92, of Whiting died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Sloan, Iowa. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mrs. Olson was born Feb. 22, 1904, in Brookings, S.D., the daughter of Charles and Hilma (Andersson) Bromander. She graduated from Sloan High School in 1921, and attended Morningside College for two years. She taught school in Remsen, Iowa and the Whiting area. She married Ernal M. Olson on Oct. 25, 1924, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple made their home near Whiting, where they operated a paint contracting business.

She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, the Covenant Women's Quilting Group, the American Legion Auxiliary Emery Johnson Post 481. She was the first woman in Iowa to shoot a deer with a bow and arrow and she enjoyed trapping and quilting.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Barbra and Gordon Dahl of Sloan and Jackine and LaVera Deen of Carroll, Iowa; a son and his wife, Keith Lavail and Joyce of Whiting; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen and Ruth Bromander; and three brothers, Hugo, Albin and Elmer.

Memorials may be given to the Evangelical Covenant Church.
