Was one of the Early Pioneers of Belvidere—Leaves Four Children—Funeral Being Held This Thursday Afternoon with Rev. Perrin Officiating

Death on Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock October 20, 1931 took from our community another of our beloved pioneer mothers, Mrs. S. S. Dorwood of Turin who quietly passed away at her home east of that town after some weeks of illness.

Mrs. Dorwood was one of the real pioneers of the county coming to Arcola back in the year of 1857 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Blackburn. Her father was the first man to make flour in the County, he operated a mill near the Sioux River at Arcola and produced the first flour in Monona County in December 1857. It was here that Mrs. Dorwood grew to womanhood. When she was 18 on December 8, 1887, she became the wife of Samuel S. Dorwood, another early settler of Belvidere Township. He took his bride with him and located on his farm south east of Turin where they resided throughout the years of their married life. Mr. Dorwood having preceded his wife some 21 years ago. Since that time she has resided on the old home place. Mrs. Dorwood was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania on June 2, 1847 and was 82 years old at the time of her death.

To this union were born 5 children—Samuel having died a number of years ago, the living are, Ralph of Turin, Mrs. Emma J. Drown of Cadwell, Idaho, Mrs. Hattie Henderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and William B Dorwood of Raleigh, North Dakota.

The funeral services are being conducted from the Methodist Church in Turin this Thursday afternoon conducted by an old friend of the family, Mr. Perrin and burial will be made in the Belvidere Cemetery. Barnard Fun Ho is in charge of the funeral. Mrs. Dorwood was one of those lovely old pioneers who has seen the hardships of the early days and who had won for herself through out the many years hundreds of friends who today are in sorrow at her passing.

Mrs. H.E. Colby and daughter, Ruth of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, John Blackburn and Mr. And Mrs. Horace Blackburn of Sioux City were those relatives who came from a distance to be at the funeral.

The children who were able to be there were Ralph Dorwood and wife of Turin, Mr. and Mrs. Henderson and daughter of Cedar Rapids and Will Dorwood and wife of North Dakota, Jessie Dorwood of Des Moines.
