MARVIN OTTO SAMMONS
Marvin Otto Sammons was born on July 15, 1935 in Onawa, Iowa. He was the second child of Shirley Jeanette Hough and Marvin Howard Sammons. Marvin began school in 1940 and graduated high school at Onawa Public School in 1954. In grade school he delivered papers for the Des Moines Register. In Junior High School he began working as a. sacker and carry out boy for the Council Oak Food Store in Onawa.

In High school he enlisted in the Naval reserves. In February of 1955 he enlisted as an active duty air force recruit taking his basic training in Texas. Following his basic training he was transferred to the air base in Rome, New York. In 1956 he met and married Delores Manfrates. To this marriage he had three children, Walter George Sammons, Marvin Otto Sammons, Jr., and Donna Jean (Sammons) Ovieda. He was transferred to Warner Robbins Airbase in Georgia. After discharge he returned to working for the Council Oak Grocery chain. He returned for a short while to Rome, NY where he worked for Revere Copper and Brass. Because of layoffs, he and his family returned to Onawa. Shortly after, he and Delores separated with Delores taking the three children and returned to Rome, NY.

Marvin continued to' work for Council Oak where his grandfather taught him to cut meat. In 1963 he met Margaret Ann Gohring. They were married on June 14, 1964. To this marriage a daughter, Ann Michele (Sammons) Moloski, was born in 1966. During this time the food company was bought by National Food and Marvin was made the assistant manager. In 1967 they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he continued to work for National Foods. In 1968 he left National Food to work for Safeway Foods in Lincoln, NE. He worked there until September 1970.

In June of 1970 he became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints now known as the Community of Christ.

He decided to go to electronics school in Kansas City, MO. While going to school he realized that electronics was not his calling. He quit school to work in the storeroom at General Hospital in Kansas City. When the new hospital was built, he accepted the position of storeroom manager at Truman Medical Center. He worked there for 28 years, most of that time as off sight storeroom supervisor. In August of 1998 he retired.

During this period of time in January of 1975 he was ordained to the office of Deacon in his church. Also, he and his wife became foster parents. They were active as senior high youth leaders and as Weblow Scout leader.

In June of l999 he and his wife moved to Chandler, AZ where they continued to be active in their church. They were senior adult leaders and took an active part in their church’s sister congregation in Tecate, Mexico.

In July of 2008 while visiting family in Missouri, Marvin became very ill. Their family encouraged them to move back to Missouri to be with family for his last days.

Marvin went to be with the Lord on August 12, 2009 after a long illness.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret Ann (Gohring) Sammons, four children, Walter Sammons, Marvin Sammons, Jr., Donna (Sammons) Ovieda, and Ann (Sammons) Moloski; 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Sammons) Boston; a sister-in-law, Sheryle Cousins; three brothers-in-law, Ed Boston, Roger Gohring, and Neal Gohring, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin H. Sammons, Shirley Jeannette (Hough) Sammons, and a brother, Dick Sammons.

Family requests donations to Outreach International or Task Force Omega of Missouri-Chapter 1 in lieu of flowers. A Memorial service will be held at the Grandview, MO Community of Christ (12600 Byars Rd, Grandview, MO 64030) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009.
