22 May 2008Elinor R. Rodgers Welch, age 91 of Denver, Colorado, and formerly of Mapleton died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 in Denver.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Mapleton.
Elinor Ruth Rodgers Welch was born on November 1, 1916 in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Florence Rodgers. Elinor graduated from the University of Iowa in 1938 with a degree in English. On August 26, 1938 she married John Robert Welch of Mapleton. He preceded her in death Jan. 27,1994.
The loves of her life were her family and friends, her home in Mapleton, her summer home in Clear Lake, Iowa, winter vacationing in Lauderdale-By-The Sea, Florida, where she loved walking the beach, shelling and having family visits., She loved Christmas, with decorating' her home, wrapping gifts beautifully and making special family treats of fudge, peppernuts, peanut brittle, holiday punch and green jelly. She also enjoyed cooking for family and friends, entertaining and reading.
Other loves of her life included playing golf-watching golf with her #1 Love, Tiger Woods; playing bridge, fresh flower arranging, scrapbooking with her family, antiquing and collecting antiques, bird watching, needle-point making Christmas stockings and ornaments for her family, making beautiful May Day baskets for her children and friends, the art of letter writing, supporting and watching the U.S. Olympic teams, and the University of Iowa Hawkeye Football team.
She was a member of St John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton and the P.E.O. in Mapleton.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carrie Welch McClellan and her husband, James R. McClellan of Denver, CO and Susan Welch Saunders of Fort Madison, Iowa ; her grandchildren, Michael S. Saunders and his wife, Trina J., Emily S. Dean and her husband, Martin J., Heather Welch Puri and her husband, Dr. Dev Puri, John Todd Welch, Andrew J. McClellan and Patrick S. McClellan; great-grandchildren, Alex S. Dean, Noah S. Dean, Katherine N. Saunders, Rachel E. Saunders, Caleb A. Saunders, John R. Puri, and William W. Puri; daughter-in-law, Joyce M. Welch and nieces, Barbara S. Halweg and Debra Bonacci.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son John Rodgers Welch, a grandson Stephen B. Saunders, four sisters, their husbands; one niece and one nephew.
