Wayne George Farwell, 74, of Kent, Wash., died Thursday, April 25, 2019, at his daughter’s home in Herriman, Utah, after an eight-month battle with gastric cancer.

Wayne was born June 30, 1944, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Frank H. and Bessie L. Farwell. He grew up in Onawa, Iowa, where he graduated from Onawa High School in 1962.

Wayne and Alyson Brown were married August 15, 1969, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas, where he was attending pilot training and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 29, 1969.

As a teenager, Wayne was an apprentice painter for his father. After graduating from high school, he received a scholarship and attended Iowa State University, where he completed his bachelor’s in aeronautical engineering. While interning as an engineer for NASA, Wayne joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He joined the ROTC while attending Iowa State and completed the program at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he received a bachelor’s in computer science. He also met Alyson while at BYU. Wayne completed his pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, then served as a C-130 pilot based in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Wayne remained in the Air Force until 1973. After retiring from the Air Force, Wayne worked for the National Environmental Satellite Service. He was a software developer for general dynamics from 1977 until 1979. Then he worked for Boeing as a software engineer and completed his Master’s in software engineering from Seattle University during that time. He retired in 2006.

Wayne enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He served in many callings for the Church as well as serving as a FamilySearch Support missionary. He was passionate about genealogy. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, soaring, and flying drones. He also loved watching sporting events, especially Seattle Seahawks games.

Survivors include his wife, Alyson; his children, Frank (Sherrie) Farwell of Gilbert, AZ, Julie (Jason) Savoldi of Herriman, UT, James (Stephanie) Farwell of Lehi, UT, Rebecca Farwell of Lehi, UT, Kathryn (Lucas) Shaw of Mesa, AZ, Thomas (Megan) Farwell of Queen Creek, AZ, Carolyn (Joseph) Cope of Spanish Fork, UT; and 18 grandchildren, Kristin, Taylor, Alyssa, Ryan, Parker, Nathan, Maycie, Viktoria, Lawson, Carson, Jaevin, Carter, Avery, Riley, Josee, Beckham, Jaxson and Colton.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bessie, and his sister Barbara Strawbridge.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 14398 S. 6400 W. Herriman, Utah, with Bishop TJ Olson officiating. A Viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Please join the family in wearing green, his favorite color, to the services. Interment will be in the Herriman City Cemetery.
