Virgil Monroe Hedges was born November 5, 1941 the son of Gilbert and Evelyn (Barker) Hedges, in a log cabin on his grandfather’s farm near Onawa, Iowa. Shortly after his birth, the family moved into the town of Onawa, where he attended school until the third grade. The family then moved to Dunlap and even though they didn’t farm anymore, he and his siblings had a milk cow they milked every day. After a few years in Dunlap, the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska for about one year, and then moved to Gretna, Nebraska, where Virgil graduated from Gretna High School in 1960. Virgil attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska for one year, and then started working for AT&T in Omaha.

Virgil was drafted into the United States Army in 1964 during the Vietnam War and served for a year and a half in England. He returned to AT&T for thirty-seven years, where he retired. He moved back to Onawa in 1995.

Virgil spent a lot of his time in the summer at a cabin on the Missouri River, watching boaters going by and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. He enjoyed gardening for many years, and sharing his vegetables with family and friends.

He is survived by his brother, Gilbert “Gene” Hedges of Blencoe, IA; sister-in-law, Louise Barker of Castana, IA; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Evelyn (Barker) Hedges; three brothers, Bob Barker, Royal (JoAnn) Hedges, and Rudy (Donna) Hedges; three sisters, Della (Paul) Brannan, Nancy (Jack) Hawbaker, and Ethel (Jack) Agerson; sister-in-law, Pauline Hedges; and a special friend, Fred Servia.
