ONAWA, Iowa -- Harriett Rutledge, 83, of Onawa died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Dennis Olson officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Harriett was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. and Ina (Rodman) Benjamin. She lived in Council Bluffs for 48 years. She was a 1939 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.

She married Malvin Beckman on Aug. 5, 1939, in Council Bluffs. Malvin was killed in an automobile accident on Nov. 5, 1964.

She was employed with People Natural Gas Company in Council Bluffs from 1965 until 1972, when she married Orville Rutledge on Sept. 29, 1972. They lived in Onawa, where he was superintendent of Onawa Cemetery. The couple also operated their business, Rutledge Monuments.

She was a member of and sang in the choir of First Christian Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing for various occasions. She volunteered much of her time to church, community and friends, but her largest dedication was to her family.

Survivors include her husband, Orville of Onawa; a son and his wife, Robert and Carol Beckman of Fort Collins, Colo.; a granddaughter and her husband, Heather and Phil Handcock of Greeley, Colo.; a grandson and his wife, Ted and Leesa Beckman of Greeley; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Garrett, Dylan and CoraLea Beckman; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Betty and Roger Stender of Blair, Neb., and Bonnie and Gary Kendall of Onawa; a stepson and his wife, Norman and Karen Rutledge of Mount Home, Ark.; eight stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be offered to the family for future charitable distribution.
