Ivan Harold Nielsen, 79, of Moorhead, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Moorhead Christian Church, Moorhead, Iowa with Lorene Dykstra, officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Moorhead Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Ivan Harold was born on May 29, 1939, in rural Moorhead, Iowa the son of Harold O. and Esther Marie (Eskelsen) Nielsen. Ivan was a lifelong resident of Moorhead, Iowa area. Growing up he attended Mann School House near Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1957.

Ivan and Janice Ella Mae Whitehouse were united in marriage on August 14, 1960, in Gruver, Iowa. They made their home and raised their children in the Moorhead area.

Ivan worked for Vetters Equipment Company, Collins Motor Supply, Skow Implement, and established his own business Nielsen Farm Equipment.

He was baptized at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead and later in life became a member of Moorhead Christian Church. Ivan achieved the Eagle Scout Award and shared his time, dedication, and leadership serving as mayor of Moorhead for Forty Years. Ivan was a past member of the Masonic Lodge and the Monona County Landfill Agency Board.

Survivors include three children, Shelly (John) Sturgill of Onawa, IA, Mark (Barb) Nielsen of Sioux City, IA, and Terry (Trisda) Nielsen of Perry, IA; grandchildren, Curtis (Elizabeth) Sturgill, Shelby Sturgill, and Dalton, Austin, Ellie, and Connor Nielsen; step grandchildren, Jessica Monell and Lindsay (Justin) Mays; great-grandchildren, Reece, Elise, and Evie Sturgill; step-great-grandchildren, Jayme, Jaycee, and Jaycob Smith, and Taylor, Kenzie, and Andi Mays; sister, Sheila (Don) Lindsey of Moorhead, IA; sisters-in-law, Joanne Prescott of Armstrong, IA and Bonnie Baker of Hemet, CA; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold O. and Esther Nielsen; his wife of 47 years, Janice Nielsen; son, Douglas Nielsen; brother, Karl Nielsen; and sister, Lottie Nielsen Magill.

Memorials in Ivan’s memory may be directed to Moorhead Fire and Rescue and the Loess Hill Cultural Center in Moorhead, Iowa.
