Roger Saxen, 70, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with Pastor Marsha Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Belvidere Cemetery near Turin, Iowa, with military honors provided by the United States Army and the American Legion. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Roger was born on July 14, 1948, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Thomas and Beatrice (Martin) Saxen. He graduated from Maple Valley High School in 1967. He then attended Ellsworth Junior College for one semester before being drafted into the United States Army in January 1969. Roger was stationed in Europe during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in January 1975.

On August 14, 1971, Roger married Patsy Davis in Mapleton, Iowa.

He began his career with the United States Postal Service, first as a mail carrier and clerk in Sioux City and Onawa, and then as the Post Master of Hornick. During this time, he resumed his education and attended night classes at Sioux Empire College and Wayne State College from 1977-1979, earning an Associate of Arts degree. After a thirty-year career with the Postal Service, he retired in 2004 to take care of Patsy.

Roger enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing poker. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa and of the Hindman-Steel American Legion Post #492 of Hornick, Iowa.

Survivors include two sons and their significant others, Brent Saxen and LaDawn Seward of Onawa, IA and Ryan Saxen and Melanie Wilder of Leander, TX; one grandson, Brenner Saxen of Omaha, NE; and his mother, Beatrice Walker of Onawa, IA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Saxen; and his wife, Patsy Saxen, on September 28, 2013.
