Mrs. Phoebe Dorothy Dead at Age of 88 Years
Passing of a Kind, Loving Mother, Friend and Neighbor – One of the Pioneer Women of This Community

The oldest continuous pioneer resident of St. Clair Township and the town of Ute, Mrs. Phoebe Dorothy, 88, was buried here in St. Clair Cemetery Monday afternoon, having passed away Saturday, December 24, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harve Taylor, in Onawa, following a week’s illness

Phoebe Booher was born at Ottumwa, Iowa, on October 31, 1850 and died at Onawa, Iowa, December 24, 1938 at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 24 days. She was the daughter of Peter Booher and Hannah Danford Booher. When a small child her parents moved to Blakesburg, Iowa, where she spent her girlhood. In the early 70’s she moved with her parents to Monona County and was of the early pioneers of St. Clair Township. She was married to E. P. Dorothy on March 28, 1878. Six children were born – Mrs. Bessie Larson, Ute, Mrs. Minnie May Taylor, Onawa; Ruey, died at age of 1 ˝ years, James Porter, Ute, Gemima died at age of 3, Mark H. Ames, Iowa.

Mrs. Dorothy united with the Christian Church in Ute in 1893. She was a charter member of the first Aid Society and was the last living member of that group. Her steadfast faith remained throughout the years and has been a benediction to all who knew her.

She was a member of the O.E.S. at Ute.

Since the death of her husband, March 23, 1917, she spent a greater part of her time at the home of her daughter in Onawa. On Sunday evening she suddenly be came ill and passed away on the following Saturday at 11 a.m.

She leaves to mourn her passing, Mrs. Bessie Larson, Ute, Mrs. Harve Taylor, Onawa, James Porter Dorothy, Ute, Mark H. Dorothy, Ames; Eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Cathrene Reynolds, Lincoln, Nebraska, many relatives and a host of friends.

Short service was held at the Mr. and Mrs. Harve Taylor home in Onawa, Monday, December 26, at one o’clock and at the Christian Church at Ute at 2:30. The services were conducted by Rev. Wayne C. Stauffer of the M.E. Church of Onawa.
