Former Ute Lady Died At Lowden
Was Wife of A. Amstein, De- Deceased, Once Lutheran Minister Here

Mrs. Rosa Amstein was buried here in St. Clair Cemetery Sunday afternoon, following brief services in the Henning Funeral Home and at St. Paul’s Church, with Pastor Nieting officiating. Her death occurred at Lowden on Wednesday evening March 2.

Rosa Amstein, ne Langhoff, was born in Holstein, Germany, December 11, 1869. At the age of three years she, with her parents, emigrated to America and settled at Davenport, Iowa.

On March 11, 1883, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Pastor Mennicke of Davenport. She then took up dressmaking until in 1890 when she was united in marriage to Pastor Reinbold Amstein, who served pastorates in Farney, South Dakota, Onawa, Sioux City, Grant Township, Ida County and Ute, Iowa. To this union five children were born, one of which died in infancy.

On November 9, 1919 her husband departed this life. The widow, with her two daughters, Olga and Hilda, then moved to Charter Oak, where Olga was teaching. In 1927 she and her son, Erich, accompanied her daughter, Olga, who had accepted the call as primary teacher in Trinity School at Lowden.

After the marriage of her daughter, Olga, in 1931 she continued making her home at Lowden, spending some time each year also with her other children. She spent the winter of 1935 in Milwaukee, sewing for a professional dressmaker.

In the fall of 1936 she went to California, spending the winter there in the pleasant company of relatives.

Before leaving Lowden she already noticed a certain numbness in one finger which steadily became worst, spreading over her limbs so that she hurried home in April, fearing that she might not be able to travel home alone if she remained longer.

She then consulted her home doctor, who diagnosed her sickness as muscular atrophy. Doctors at Iowa City and Rochester confirmed the diagnosis and said there was no remedy.

After six months of intense suffering her prayer that she might be relieved was answered, when death came on Wednesday evening, March 2, 1928.

She reached the age of 68 years, 2 months and 19 days. She leaves to mourn her departure a son, Erich, and Mrs. Olga Hoffmeier of Lowden, and a son, Walter, and Mrs. George Engelke of Ute and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Trinity Lutheran Church at Lowden Saturday afternoon, Pastor Herm Maas officiating.

The pallbearers at Ute were Peter Mohr, Charles Bartels, Herman Kiepe, Paul Fiene, Carl Klaus, Jr., and Ed Spahn.
