Death Removes A Stalwart Citizen
Dan Hartigan Answers Sudden Summons At Sioux City Hospital

This community was shocked and saddened on Friday morning when news came of the death of Daniel T. Hartigan in a Sioux City hospital, where he had gone a few days before to consult a doctor in regard to an eye condition.

Mr. Hartigan had been in his usual health and no one, not even those nearest, realized that his condition was at all serious or that death could be so near.

The remains were brought to Ute and taken to the family home and the funeral was held from St. Mary’s Church Monday morning at nine o’clock. A solem Requiem Mass was celebrated, his pastor, Rev. Father Kane, as celebrant, Rev. Ocken of Mapleton, deacon, Rev. Father Schumaker of Charter Oak, as sub-deacon and Rev. Father Gearen of Onawa, master of ceremonies. The church was crowded to overflowing with relatives and friends. Father Kane paid a beautiful tribute to the life of the deceased.

Daniel Timothy Hartigan was born at Victoria, Australia, December 1, 1870, the second eldest of a family of twelve children. At the age of six years his parents came to America, locating in Chicago where they lived a few years, later coming to Monona County, Iowa, where he spent the remaining years of his life and where he united his efforts with those other pioneers in bring things to the present comfortable way of living.

On April 27, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Higgins of Ute and the young couple took up housekeeping on a farm just south of town, which was the family home for many years.

In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Hartigan celebrated their silver anniversary, and it was shortly after this that the first sorrow came to them in the death of their young daughter, Eileen.

In the life of Daniel Hartigan was the fulfillment of all those qualities which go to the making of the true Christian husband and father. As a neighbor and friend there were few who wee his equal. Always ready and willing to help those in need or sorrow.

No gathering of this nature was complete without his kindly and cheerful presence and in his passing Ute lost a valued citizen and the community a true, good friend. That this is true is attested by the constant stream of people who were at the home up to the time of the funeral services.

Mr. Hartigan is survived by his wife, Margaret; eight children, Edward, Mary, Marcella and Joseph at home; Mrs. Lawrence Eckhoff, Mrs. Marion Torgerson, J.L. and Daniel of Ute; also, by six sisters, Sister M. St. Luke of Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. M. J. Barrett of Omaha; Mrs. Hugh Foley of Charter Oak, Mrs. P.W. Smith of Dunlap, Miss Margaret of Gary, Indiana, four brothers, John P., James S., Edward and Matthew of Ute and five grandchildren.

Two sisters preceded him in death, Agnes and Mrs. Nellie Flynn.

Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Ute.
