Dean At East High expires

From the Sunday Sioux City Journal, we reprint the following article which tells of the death of Miss Alice Mower, at one time a teacher in the Ute high School.

“Death claimed Miss Alice Mower, dean at East High School and for more than 15 years an instructor in Sioux City’s public schools, Saturday morning at a hospital after a lingering illness. She was 48 years old.

“Miss Mower resided at 1805 Patterson Avenue, having made her home in Sioux City for the last 32 years. She came here with her parents from her birthplace at Morrisville, N.J., when a child.

“For the last six years she had been dean at East High School. However, the final two months of the school year this spring she was inactive due to illness.

“Miss Mower received her early education at central High School where she was a member of the Hesperian society and later was graduated from Morningside College. She was a member of the Zetelethian Society at that institution.

“Later Miss Mower attended the University of Chicago and finally obtained her Master of Arts degree at Columbia University in New York City.

“Her first teaching position was at the Ute, Iowa, public school. In Sioux City, she taught the seventh grade at the Hawthorne School 15 years ago. Her next appointment was as instructor of English at Central High School where she also was in charge of the Hi-Y Club. For five years she was dean at West Junior taking a like post at East High.

“Miss Mower was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs. K.A. Thomas in Oakland, N.J. and one brother, Clayton W. Mower, in Bremerton, Washington.

“Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church with Rev. George C. Pullman officiating. Interment will be in Logan Park Cemetery.”
