CATHERINE RAINS

Katherine Rains, 78, a former longtime resident of Whiting, passed away on December 17, 1972, at a Monticello, Iowa, hospital. She had resided at Center Junction, Iowa, the past four years.

She was born Katherine Piatt, the daughter of Joshua and Jennie Piatt, on August 6, 1894, in Monona County. She was married to George Custer in 1910 and he died in 1930. She was then married to Jess Rains on April 13, 1942, and he passed away in 1968. She was a member of the Whiting Christian Church and the Dorcas Society of the church.

Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Donald (Yuba) Otter of Center Junction, Iowa, and Mrs. Wilbur (Ethel) Mock of Turin, Iowa; and three sons, Wyman Custer of Halstead, Minnesota, Willis Custer of Marathon, Florida, and George Custer of Christchurch, New Zealand; three stepsons, Willis, Claude and Glenn Rains all of Sioux City, Iowa, and one step-daughter, Mrs. Rollie (Darlene) Colwell of Vancouver, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Wilbur Strong of Los Angeles, California. and two brothers, Fay Piatt of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Wallace Piatt of Sioux City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Merle Custer, in 1931.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1972, at the Church of Christ in Whiting, with the Rev. Richard Lankford officiating. Nancy and Kaye Brenden sang, accompanied by Nancy Linden. Casket bearers were Charles Funkhouser, August Westergaard, Harold Westergaard, John Scott, Morris Rustin and Floyd Crossley. Interment was in the Whiting Cemetery with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home of Whiting
