Janet Louise Ulven Foss, 75, of Onawa, formerly of Soldier, passed away, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Soldier Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Online condolences may be directed to meyerbroschapels.com.

Janet, the daughter of Verne and Leona (Manitz) Ulven, was born on Aug. 28, 1942, in Worthington, Minn. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Round Lake, Minn., and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1960. She excelled in basketball, setting school records.

She worked 20 plus years at WinnaVegas Casino, and after retiring, she volunteered for the Senior Companion Program.

Janet was a stay at home mom while she raised her three children. She had several part-time jobs and did a lot of volunteer work in the community and church. She taught Sunday school, was the Sunday school superintendent and on the board of education, and also started a junior choir for the lower grades.

She fought a long hard battle with heart disease, diabetes, and dialysis but now she's free.

Janet is survived by three children, Robin (Brian) Johnson of Sioux City, David (Shelly) Foss of Soldier, and Dan (Diane) Foss of Onawa; three brothers, Lon (Jo) Ulven of Milford, Iowa, Jon Ulven of Omaha, and Kirk (Danielle) Ulven of Beresford, S.D.; two sisters, Carol (Roger) Gray of Onawa, and Joy (Rick) Ehlers of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren, Dr. Andrew (Lea) Johnson of Sioux Falls, Jordan (Jon) Ireland of Sergeant Bluff, Matthew Kolker of Ames, Iowa, Danielle Foss of Owatonna, Iowa, and Gavin Foss of Ankeny, Iowa; and four great-grandchildren, Emma and Lola Johnson, and Archie and Adeline Ireland.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
