Mapleton, Iowa – Hans Otto Miller, 86, of Mapleton died Saturday in a nursing home in Lyons, Nebraska, after a long illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Philip Ritter will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Miller was born February 14, 1897, at Ute. He farmed in the Danbury and Mapleton area. He married Clara Wellner December 28, 1920 at Denison. They moved to Mapleton in 1948 and he worked for Armour & Co. in Sioux City for 15 years, retiring in 1962.

He was an Army veteran of World War I

And was a 50-year member of Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion and a member of St. Mathew’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, one son, Ephraim “Shorty” of Smithland; three daughters, Mrs. Willis (Violet) Steckelberg of Mapleton, Mrs. Robert (Nelda) Weber of Mapleton and Mrs. Fern Carter of Simi Valley, California; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Tracy) Moltsau of Onawa and Mrs. Emma Mauch of Fort Dodge; 26 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
