Obituary of Mrs. Lillie Coon

Mrs. Lillie Coon, formerly of Smithland, Iowa, died in the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa on October 2, 1984, where she had resided the past 12 years. Death came at the age of 103 years and 22 days.

She was born in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, on September 10, 1881, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Murphy Parkhill. She married Aaron Coon May 3, 1925, at Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple farmed in the Smithland area until 1958 when they moved into town. Mr. Coon died January 10, 1965.

She was a member of the Smithland United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Cemetery Society at Smithland.

Survivors include her two sons, Clark and John Mead, both of Smithland, one daughter, Mrs. Rex (Gladys) Briggs of Los Molinos, California; three stepsons, Clifford and Art Coon, both of Sioux City and John Coon of Bushnell, Illinois; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lela Martin and Mrs. Lucille Dennis, both of Sioux City; 24 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Aaron and two sons, Lawrence and Minus Mead.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 5, 1984 at the United Methodist Church at Smithland, Iowa, with Pastor Gary DeGeest officiating. The organist was Mrs. Saul Mitchell.

Casket bearers were Billy Mead, Robert Mead, Duane Mead, Lawrence Mead, James C. Mead and James Mead.

Interment was in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa with arrangements by William Funeral Home.
