Louise E. Sander, 96, of Mapleton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Richard D. Ball will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Louise Elizabeth Sander, one of 13 children born to Joseph and Barbara (Theobald) Dirksen, was born on July 27, 1921, in rural Mapleton. She graduated the eighth grade from St. Mary's Catholic School in 1935 and Mapleton Public School in 1939.

In 1942, Louise married Robert L. Sander of Ute, Iowa. She was blessed with three daughters, Barbara, Patricia, and Diane. In 1948, Louise and her daughters moved to Danbury, Iowa, to live with her brother, Joseph A. Dirksen. In 1953, they all moved to a farm that Joseph bought north of Mapleton.

Louise was a detailed seamstress, making many dresses, formals, and children's clothing. In her past time, Louise enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, square dancing and embroidery. She relished spending time with her daughters and their families.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Barbara Castle, and her family granddaughter, Tammy (Mike) Flanigan of Mapleton, and her family, Alex (Lindsey) of Omaha, Angie (Andy) and their children, John and Elsie Sass of Mapleton, Joe (Alex) and son Beau Flanigan of Mapleton, and Shawn Flanigan of Ames, Iowa, granddaughter, Teri Kay (Tom) Tusha of Clear Lake, Iowa and her sons, Tanner of Des Moines, and Tucker of Clear Lake, granddaughter, Holly Brezina and her children, Sara and Will of Omaha, grandson, Bill (Kathy) Castle and his daughters, Ellen and Audrey of Boone, Iowa, Erin of Iowa City, Iowa, grandson, Travis (Lori) Castle of Treynor, Iowa and her children, Ty of Maryville, Mo., Trey of Ames, Iowa and Tori of Treynor, Iowa, grandson, Ryan (Lora) Castle of Round Rock, Texas and her daughters, Jaide of Round Rock, and Helena of Austin, Texas; daughter, Patty Trupp of Bullhead City, Ariz., and her family grandson, Robert (Debbie Betty) Moorhouse of Colorado Springs, Colo., and his son, Austin Moorhouse of Clarksville, Tenn., granddaughter, Cynthia (Mike) Simpson of Colorado Springs, and her sons, Chad (Bri) Simpson and his daughter, Kensington, of Colorado Springs, and his son, Chase Simpson of Colorado Springs, and his daughter, Debra K. (Dan) Spilman of Colorado Springs, and their daughter Jessica of Dayton, Ohio; and daughter, Diane (George) Carpenter of Branson, Mo., and family grandson, Dan (Kim) Thompson of Osceola, Mo., and his sons, Marek Thompson of Emporia, Kan., and Jade of Osceola, Mo., stepgrandson, Randy (Lisa) Carpenter of Olathe, Kan. and family, Cody of Kansas City, Kan., and Zach of Vancouver, Wash., stepgrandson, Rich (Doreen) Carpenter of Parkville, Mo., and children, Samantha and Jake Colombia, Mo., stepgranddaughter, Lenee (Louie) Pfeiler of Omaha, and son, Hunter Carpenter of Lincoln, Neb., and stepgrandson, Scott Carpenter of Jeonju, South Korea.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Barbara Dirksen; siblings, Pearl Dickman, Clara Schleimer, Ed Dirksen, Albina (sister, Ronald), George Dirksen, Anna Oberreuter, Rosina Miller, Leo Dirksen, Joseph Dirksen Jr., Mary Arney, and Ronald Dirksen; and sons-in-law, Bill Castle and Ramon Trupp.
