WHITING, Iowa -- Marian (Schissel) Pike, 92, of Whiting died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rush Family Care Service of Onawa, Iowa.

Marian was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Gilmore City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mildred (Campbell) Schissel. She graduated from Garner (Iowa) High School in 1930 and Grinnell College, with honors in English, in 1934. She taught English at Webster City (Iowa) High School for two years and Elvira Consolidated School for one year.

She worked for five years in radio at Iowa Broadcasting Co. for the Des Moines Register and Tribune, writing scripts for women and children's programs.

She married Herbert Whittier Pike on April 19, 1941.

Her volunteer efforts were numerous. She served on the Whiting Community School board for 13 years, the Iowa State Conservation Commission from 1975 to 1987, and was a feature writer for Hoard's Dairyman Magazine for 20 years. She was a member of First Congregational Church for 50 years, taught Sunday School, wrote and produced Christmas tableaus for 20 years and wrote and directed community plays. She was a member and former president of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the P.E.O., served as a 4-H leader and in her later years was the Current Events leader at Pleasant View Care Center for 15 years.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Julie and Ed McCutcheon of Naperville, Ill.; a son and his wife, Charles W. and Carla Pike of Whiting; four grandchildren, Shannon (McCutcheon) Boyle (Terry) of Oakland, Calif., Scarlett McCutcheon of Ann Arbor, Mich., Brenton H. Pike (Rebecca) of Whiting and Alison (Pike) Wiggs (Jason) of Whiting; two great-granddaughters, Brenna and Briley Pike of Whiting; and a great-grandson, Brady Wiggs of Whiting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert W. Pike; and her parents, Mildred and Charles Schissel.

Memorials may be directed to the Whiting Public Library and First Congregational Church of Whiting.
