Dick E. Harris, 87, of Iron River, formerly of Moorhead, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, Mich.
Burial will be in Battle Creek, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls.
He was born on June 16, 1930, in Moorhead, son of the late Richard and Fern (Carpenter) Harris. He proudly served with the U.S. Coast Guard from July 1947 until his honorable discharge in July 1951. For many years he was in the Civil Air Patrol in Dakota City.
Dick was united in marriage to Irene Hein on July 8, 1956, in Elk Point, S.D. She preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 2016. Dick was a truck driver for most of his life after leaving the Coast Guard, working for Barber Transportation Company in Sioux City, and Sioux Falls, S.D. and later for Hymen Freight in Fargo, N.D.. He along with his wife, Irene, managed apartments from 1987 until 1999 in Fargo. They moved to Iron River in 1999.
Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, going to the casino, and in his youth, he loved to bowl.
Dick is survived by four daughters, LaDonna Bethke, Sioux Falls, Sandi (David) Bertsch, Iron River, Tina (Doug) Herold, Casselton, N.D., and Linda (Scott) Beverson, Eden Prairie, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Irene, Dick was preceded in death by three sisters, Nita Edlund, Itha Hammond and Letha Newman; two brothers, Gale Harris and Neil Harris; a granddaughter, Shantel Herold; and one son-in-law, Abe Bethke.
