Helen M Hoy. 102, of Mapleton, died Monday, Nov 13,2006, in Mapleton.
Services were Thursday Nov. 16 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton with Pastor Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.,Mapleton. Kathy Johnson was the organist for the service, and the congregation sang "One Day At A Time" and "BeyondThe Sunset. "A prayer service was Wednesday, Nov 15 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Helen Mae Hoy was born on a farm north of Mapleton on June 12, 1904. She was the daughter of Emanuel P. and Mary Addie (Wedmore) Hoy.
The family moved to Holly Springs and in 1911, moved to the "home" place near Smithland. After the death of her father in 1919, her mother, her sister, Clementa (Clemy) and Helen moved into Mapleton. She graduated from Mapleton High School in 1922 and then worked for the power company. In 1943, she started working as a teller at Mapleton Trust and Savings Bank (now Valley Bank and Trust) where she continued to work until 1993 when she retired for which she received a gold watch. She continued doing public relations work for the bank on a part-time basis after retirement.
She was a member of St Peter's United Church of Christ since 1944 and Women's Fellowship, taught Sunday School and was a past secretary-treasurer. She was a member of the Chapter F Q PEO Sisterhood, where she served as president and held other offices in the past. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, Friends of Wildlife and Daughters of American Revolution, and a former secretary of the Mapleton School Board.
Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Gene F and Lois Vanderbur of Mapleton, three great-nieces, Mary Margaret Conway and her husband Tim, of Crete Neb., Vicki Gallagher and her husband, John of Cumming Iowa, and Krista Elmquist and her husband Tom of Mapleton and a great nephew, Dr. Lars Vanderbur and his wife, Jen of Omaha Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother; a sister, Clemy; a nephew, Charles L Vanderbur and his wife, Cecelia, a great niece, Kit Louise Vanderbur and a great-nephew, Kirk Charles Vanderbur.
Pallbearers were Daryl Scheer, John Babl, Leo Dean, Keith Robinson, Gary Thies and Bill Hagerdon.
