UTE, Iowa -- Clarence "Jim" Martz, 84, of Ute died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Clarence "Jim" Amos Martz was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Oliver and Elsie (Bridgeman) Martz. He moved with his family to the Albia-Ottumwa, Iowa area. After the death of his father, he lived with Lillie and Russell Bridgeman. At the age of 13, he went out on his own, working as a stable boy. He was later employed by Cril and Marie Flynn of Ute as a farm hand.

On Oct. 15, 1943, he was united in marriage to Clara Mae Hayes. In 1944, they moved to their farm near Ute. After 60 years of marriage, Clara passed away July 3, 2004.

He was a member of Ute United Methodist Church until its closing. He then became a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, Iowa. He was a kind man and devoted husband and father.

Those family members left to cherish their memories of him include a son and his wife, Don and Laura Martz of Ute; a daughter, Norma Mohr of Mapleton, Iowa; five grandchildren, James R. "J.R." Martz of Sioux City, Jessica and her husband, Fred Jepsen of Charter Oak, Iowa, James Mohr and his friend, Laura Grapes of St. Louis, Mo., Russell Mohr and his special friend, Jennifer Burbridge of Ute and Lance Mohr and his friend, Kristen Strunk of Sergeant Bluff; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Beau Mohr; two brothers and their wives, LeRoy and Leona Ostemeyer of Albia, Iowa, and Frank and Lorraine Martz of Wakonda, S.D.; two sisters, Pearl and her husband, Orville Heck of Princeton, Mo., and Bertha "Pete" Marchel and the late Buddy Marchel of Lafeyette, Ind.; along with many other relatives and good friends.

Along with his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Les Mohr; a brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Ada Purdy and Clara Strong.
